Q   What is the prostate gland?
A   The male prostate is a walnut-sized gland that lies just beneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out through the penis. The prostate secretes seminal fluid that nourishes and protects sperm during ejaculation.

Q What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and how do hormonal changes affect the male prostate gland?
A   Hormonal changes that take place after the age of 40 may cause the prostate to increase in size, a condition known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Gradual prostate enlargement is a common problem in men over 50 years and is present in about 90% of men over 80. It is estimated that one in four men will become so affected by BPH that he will seek professional help. BPH is not the same as prostate cancer or prostate inflammation (prostatitis).
